Northern Housing Festival offers insight into sector challenges and innovation

Pretium Framework Growth Manager Joe Taylor recently attended the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) Northern Housing Festival, joining industry professionals from across the UK for a day of discussion, learning, and collaboration on some of the most pressing issues facing the housing sector.

The event provided a comprehensive programme of sessions, beginning with a thought-provoking debate on one of the sector’s most significant strategic questions: retrofit versus rebuild. This discussion set the tone for the day, highlighting the complex balance between sustainability, cost, and long-term asset performance.

As the festival progressed, attention turned to asset management, with speakers sharing insights into best practices, emerging challenges, and innovative approaches to maintaining and improving housing stock.

Fiona MacGregor, who stepped down as Chief Executive of the Regulator of Social Housing in April concluded the day with a speech about her reflections on the sector, the regulator’s journey, and the strength and stability of the organisation.

Throughout the event, there were valuable opportunities to connect with both new and familiar faces across the industry, fostering conversations that will help inform ongoing work and strengthen professional relationships.

A standout moment of the day was a compelling presentation by Ben Briggs, who shared Beyond Housing UK’s lived experience of navigating the retrofit versus rebuild challenge. His practical insights and honest reflections offered a grounded perspective on an issue that continues to shape decision-making across the sector.

Reflecting on the event, Joe noted the importance of forums like the Northern Housing Festival in bringing together diverse voices and experiences, helping to drive innovation and informed decision-making in housing.
